How to Jerk Without Being a Jerk- clicker dog training

admin | September 3rd, 2010

In this video I demo how you can reinforce heelwork by letting the dog tug on the leash (or if you choose not to use the leash- a tug toy). When you make the learning process a fun error-less learning process the dogs start to enjoy behaviors that could otherwise be very dull like heelwork. One of Splash’s favorite rewards is a good tug on the leash. But be warned, you first have to teach your dog to let go of the leash and grab the leash when you ask if you want to use it as a reward. Capturing Calmness- help for hyper dogs-dog training

admin | August 21st, 2010

This video is a tutorial on how to teach your puppy or dog to be calm. Some dogs need help to learn how to relax. Calmness does not come naturally to some breeds .By reinforcing your dog for being calm, your dog will start to choose calmer behaviors in the future and actually enjoy being calm. Tips for teaching a Default Settle: Don’t drop treats if the dog looks up at your hand as you move to give the dog the treat, instead try again later. Don’t cue the dog “down”. It works better if the dog figures it out on his own and CHOOSES to lay down. Use high value treats like real meat or cheese for such a wonderful behavior.

Stop puppies biting- clicker dog training

admin | August 11th, 2010

This video is on how to stop your puppy biting you. Dogs use their mouths to interact with their environment, so it is normal for a puppy to want to bite your hands or clothes. However in our society it is highly inappropriate. To train a puppy to stop using their mouth when interacting with humans is simple. All you have to do is set up training scenarios where your puppy would normally start biting and train an alternate response- calmly sitting, lying down, standing, or walking with a closed mouth. First you would start with the least arousing game- so simply just a reaching hand. As you reach, click or say “yes” and then feed a treat. As the puppy is successful you can progress to more and more arousing stimulus. You should not allow your dog to be man handled or petted roughly. Petting should not only be rewarding for the human but for the dog as well. However at some point in your dogs life, someone might get to your dog before you can stop them and be overly rough. You can prepare your dog for these situations by playing training games. But when these situations do occur in real life, respect your dog, and get them out of the stressful situation. Do practice handling exercises for grooming as well as vet visits regularly… Tips- These exercises should only be done by ADULTS. As children can actually TEACH dogs to find mouthing and biting fun. If you want to work with your child as the distraction, have your puppy with you on leash while you control all

Building Attention: Game 1 Clicker dog training

admin | August 9th, 2010

This video goes over one game of how to train your dog to pay attention to you in distracting environments. If you find that your dog is not interested in the game, try the game with higher level reinforcement- better treats (or toys), move to a less distracting environment, more to an area where you can run more (yet is safe)- as you could see in my video my yard was almost too small to play this game as its really moving fast and away that encourages a dog to run to you.

How to stop leash biting- clicker dog training

admin | August 8th, 2010

This is a video tutorial on how to teach your puppy not to bite at his leash. Don’t start the training games, AS the problems are occurring. Start the games when your puppy is calm and relaxed to set him up for success. If your puppy is very excitable, you could have your puppy on leash or in a pen while someone else does the distraction further away from you at first so that the puppy can cope. Teaching default calm behaviors like a ’settle’ will increase your puppies abilities to cope with exciting situations and make the correct choices.

This is a video of me working on some ideas for a double dog routine with Splash and Tug. Splash is 2 years old and Tug is about 9-10 months. I have had Tug for 5 months now, and he is simply brilliant, and really shows how only using Positive reinforcement really WORKS! :) I do not use any form of positive punishment with my dogs. Meaning they can never get anything wrong…

Dog Training: Rally O Fun at the Park

admin | July 17th, 2010

Kaine is trained using positive reinforcement and the clicker. I taught him everything he knows using these amazing methods and Kaine has the time of his life trying to get me to click. Kaine and I started practicing rally at our local park. Each course we designed on the spot and each time we went thorough a course, it was for the first time. My sister and I decided to add lots of tricks to the mix to make the course challenging and fun. I started practicing sequences with Kaine, where he gets randomly rewarded for so many behaviors. We had a blast and I am so impressed with Kaine. Anytime he made a mistake, I was to blame. After all, I gave him the wrong hand signal for the rollover at first and I forgot which paws where which. The runs were so much fun and Kaine had a perfect performance. If you notice, I gave Kaine an informal cue while we walked which was Lets Go. That cue is different than our formal Close (heel) cue. I dont agree with requiring a dog to solely stare at you on command because if they have any concerns about the environment and they arent allowed to look around, then they never develop any coping skills. Kaine always has the option to look around and he chose to watch me instead. My favorite parts were his rodeo reverse, his beautiful attention while walking, and his super speedy rollover. I chose not to add music to our practice so that people can hear how I speak to Kaine. There is never any angry yelling of any kind, or any verbal reprimands or
